In a television interview, Sunil Gangopadhyay, an Indian poet, historian, and novelist in the Bengali language, was once asked about the poetic quality of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister of India. He denied Vajpayee's poetic ability. He opined that if Vajpayee is a poet, then why is he the prime minister? It means saying that a political leader has no such quality. It may be a passion for an individual. A political leader’s thinking is within the realm of politics. That very special quality does not match with the daily activities of a political leader, whether he/she is a Prime Minister or a Chief Minister.
Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal, was awarded by the Bangla Academy for ‘relentless literary pursuit." The award, introduced this year (2022) by Sahitya Academy, was presented to Banerjee for her book "Kabita Bitan". It is a political tactic imposed by her to recognise and rename her as a poet, writer, painter, lyricist, and so forth. She is spreading the idea that "he who knows how to cook knows how to tie his hair." But in psychology, it is not yet established. It may be only a proverb. She is now being trolled about her quality in various media. Some of the extant poets and writers are also protesting because it is an injustice and unfair. It has been noticed that TMC is used to imitate various activities of the Left. But the Left has its own principles and agenda because it has a long history and literature that is praiseworthy to think tanks worldwide. It is covered by the contributions of Karl Marx, F Engels, and other thinkers. It has been derived after continued social and economic research, and this trend is still on the way. It is prominently relevant even today. It influences the social, cultural, and economic transformation of almost every society.
It is obvious that the left has an agenda to make the general public aware of these and what roles they have for a free and equal society. It has no contradiction in daily life. The left publicises this in different ways.
But TMC has no history and no literature. There is even doubt about the principles and agenda of this political party. It’s upliftment was very much a different issue. Actually, the failure of the left to rectify its weakness facilitated the uplift of TMC. Sometimes, it works as left. It never respects and values the left. As a result, TMC supreme tries to compete left after writing some literary books which are exhibited and sold on different occasions. Her writings' qualities are not judged because she has trapped the majority of Bengal's exponent writers. So, all of them are involved in praising her blindly. No criticism is allowed.
Bengal has a long history of heritage in the culture of literary works, which are now submerged because of improper patronage. Political illiteracy harms this. No criticism of the government is respected. There are two distinct classes that originated. One class is grovelling to the government for whatever it does because of the fulfilment of some personal greed, and another class is afraid to criticise because of harassment. When they will be awaken, that is the latest question.
When a government is sunk in corruption in every sphere, how does it bind us to the democratic rule of law? Today, Bengal is in a great crisis. We need a path to come out of this.
