- હિદાયત પરમાર  જન આંદોલનના શ્રેષ્ઠ અને કુશળ સંગઠક, લૌકપ્રહરી એવા સનત મહેતાનો જન્મ ૧૯ એપ્રિલ ૧૯૨૫ ના રોજ ગુજરાતના ભાવનગર જિલ્લાના જેસર ગામમાં થયો હતો. તેમના પિતા શિક્ષક હતા. તેમણે ભાવનગરની શામળદાસ કોલેજમાં અભ્યાસ કર્યો હતો જ્યાં તેમણે ૧૯૪૧ માં ભાવનગર વિદ્યાર્થી સંઘનું નેતૃત્વ કર્યું હતું. તેમણે ૧૯૪૨માં ભારત છોડો ચળવળમાં ભાગ લીધો હતો અને જેલવાસ ભોગવ્યો હતો. આઝાદી પછી, તેઓ સમાજવાદથી પ્રભાવિત થયા અને રામ મનોહર લોહિયા અને જયપ્રકાશ નારાયણની આગેવાની હેઠળની ચળવળોમાં જોડાયા. સનત મહેતા,મહાગુજરાત આંદોલનના નેતા, જેમના કારણે ગુજરાતની રચના થઈ. ગુજરાતમાં સમાજવાદને પ્રોત્સાહન આપવા માટે સમગ્ર જાહેર જીવન વિતાવનાર એક જબરદસ્ત વ્યક્તિત્વ, સનતભાઇએ રાજ્યમાં સંખ્યાબંધ ચળવળોનું નેતૃત્વ કર્યું હતું અને તેમાં યોગદાન આપ્યું હતું. તેઓ મંડલ-બેચરાજી સ્પેશિયલ ઇન્વેસ્ટમેન્ટ રિજન (MBSIR), ધોલેરા SIR, મીઠી-વિરડી ન્યુક્લિયર પાવર પ્લાન્ટ અને ભાવનગરના મહુવામાં નિરમાના સિમેન્ટ પ્લાન્ટ જેવા ખાનગી પ્રોજેક્ટ્સ- સરકારી પ્રોજેક્ટ્સ સામે લડત આપનારા આંદોલનકારીઓમાંના પણ એક હતા. તેઓ સરકાર સામે ખેડૂતોના પ્રતિકારનો પર્યાય બની ગયા...

ILO ના નવેમ્બર ૨૦૨૩ ના અહેવાલ મુજબ વિશ્વમાં બાંધકામમાં દર વર્ષે ૩૦ લાખ કામદારો મૃત્યુ પામે છે જેમાં ૨.૬ મિલિયન મૃત્યુ કામ સંબંધીત રોગો અને ૩૩૦૦૦૦ મૃત્યુ કામના સ્થળે થતા જીવલેણ અકસ્માતોને આભારી છે. જે ૨૦૧૫ ની સરખામણીમાં ૫ ટકાથી વધુનો વધારો છે એવું ILO નો અભ્યાસ દર્શાવે છે. આપણા દેશમાં બાંધકામ ક્ષેત્રમાં થતા અકસ્માતોનો કોઈ આધારભૂત ચોક્કસ આંકડો મળતો નથી. આઈ આઈ ટી દિલ્હીના સંશોધન રીપોર્ટમાં એક અંદાજ એવો છે કે ભારતમાં દરરોજ ૩૮ કામદારો કામ દરમ્યાન અકસ્માતનો ભોગ બને છે. ગુજરાતમાં છેલ્લા ૧૬ વર્ષમાં ૧૯૭૧ કામદારો અકસ્માતોનો ભોગ બન્યા છે તેમાં ૧૫૦૬ કામદારોના મૃત્યુ થયા છે. વર્ષ ૨૦૨૩ માં ૧૦૨ કામદારો અકસ્માતમાં માર્યા ગયા છે. અમદાવાદમાં છેલ્લા ત્રણ વર્ષમાં ૧૩૨ બાંધકામ શ્રમિકો અકસ્માતમાં મૃત્યુ પામ્યા છે. Of the several interesting sessions, the  symposium on ‘Dam Removal as a River Restoration Tool at the Water-Energy-Food Nexus’ was of particular interest.   I was simultaneously at two parallel sessions and hence was unable to attend some of the presentations but have tried to provide an overview of the presentations and discussions, in addition to the session where I presented a paper.

By Shailendra Pandya*   The District Legal Service Authority (DLSA), Udaipur, has awarded Rs 1.25 lakh compensation each to two minor sisters who were married as 12 and 14 year olds. This compensation comes as a huge relief to the two sisters who, while struggling to free themselves from their child marriages, also became orphans and had no one to turn to. In September 2023, they had approached court to nullify their marriages.
